A new tool for an old problem
Cancer is characterized by somatic mutations that provide a growth and survival advantage. The mutations are a function of chance because of the random nature of mutagenesis. However, the biology in the tumor cells drives the selection of mutations that are advantageous to the cancer. 1 in addition, the tumor environment exerts a selective pressure on the tumor. For example, the hypoxic environ...

Over the last two decades, interventional techniques in bronchology, including airway stenting, have become an accepted and widely used method for the relief of critical airway stenoses [1]. Currently, main indications are bridgeable malignant stenoses in the course of palliative care. Another field of experience with stents has unfolded in lung transplant surgery with regard to anastomosis pro...
متن کاملAn old perspective on a new problem
An old perspective on a new problem Adipose tissue (AT) has evolved to be a highly dynamic organ, readily remodeling to meet the demands of an ever-changing metabolic landscape, as illustrated by the rapid changes in adipose depots of rodents undergoing various nutritional stresses. It takes as little as one week of high-fat feeding (HFF) in rodents for adipocytes to become enlarged, storing fo...
متن کاملTEMPERATURE CORRECTION OF ARTERIAL BLOOD pH AND CO2 TENSION IN NEWBORN INFANTS: A NEW SOLUTION FOR AN OLD PROBLEM
The acid-base status and arterial blood gas change with temperature variation. To determine the changes in arterial pH and pC02, arterial blood samples of 50 neonates with different clinical conditions were examined at temperatures of 35 to 42°C with an increment of 0.5° C, which resulted in two nonlinear equations with perfect fit on data. The temperature correction factors of these equati...

A patient with progressive visual loss was found to have an optic nerve sheath meningioma. The patient was treated with stereotactic radiotherapy, a computer-guided stereotactic technique that minimizes the risk of radiation-induced optic neuropathy. Six months after treatment, the patient was doing well and showed no signs of radiation-induced optic neuropathy.
